Have you ever had the feeling that if you forget something that happened to you, you might also forget a big part of yourself? I’m talking about moments and experiences that shaped you into the person you are today. Happiness, sadness, good or evil, love stories, heartaches, tragedies or simple and pure joy. All of these, and probably much more, created the YOU you are today, right now when you are reading this. You go on with your life. You get over things. But the memories of those moments are still there.
What would we be without the memories of our childhood, of our teenage years, of our past altogether? Numb. I have always avoided numbness. Even if it meant being crazy hurt before being crazy happy. Going through life in a state of numbess is one of the worst things I can think of. Do everything you can not to lose your memories. Live life the best you can to the point where it creates the YOU you want to be tomorrow.
“Lost opportunities, lost possibilities, feelings we can never get back. That’s part of what it means to be alive. But inside our heads – at least that’s where I imagine it – there’s a little room where we store those memories. A room like the stacks in this library. And to understand the workings of our own heart we have to keep on making new reference cards. We have to dust things off every once in awhile, let in fresh air, change the water in the flower vases. In other words, you’ll live forever in your own private library.” (H.M.)
